Diamond Products is a leading manufacturer of industrial grade diamond blades, core bits
and saws. When Diamond Products needed a new tradeshow exhibit they turned to RGI.
The exhibit must reflect their corporate brand, display a wide range of products and be flexible enough to allow for various show configurations. The result is an engaging exhibit that allows Diamond to reinforce relationships with existing customers as well as reach out to new markets.

Gaining an understanding of the motivating factor behind peoples’ behavior is essential in designing an impactful physical environment. This is why it is important to discover why people behave the way they do. You must immerse yourself into the world of others to see how they behave in everyday, real world settings.

Don’t you want to know everything you can about the people you are designing for? To be successful in creating a BEHAVIORAL IMPACT THROUGH DESIGN, searching for evidence that points toward insights will help explain why people chose to behave the way they do.

Evidence is the foundation for something we believe to be true. It helps justify the design decisions we make to successfully change peoples’ behavior. Statistics, facts, true stories and more are all examples of evidence to use during the design process.

Insights will provide an understanding of a situation or behavior. They show an individual’s perception of what can sometimes be a complex idea. Insights can be general thoughts or statements that help show reasoning to explain people’s behaviors.

A research-based project completed at Summit County Childrens’ Services demonstrates the use and importance of gathering insights and evidence while working through the design process. Focusing on the behaviors of the children of the space was the goal when observing and interviewing for this project. Being able to relate to kids and see things through their eyes helps the overall design impact their behavior in a positive way.

Searching for the discovery and interpretation of facts; pieces of information presented as having objective reality.

Research is an important guide within RGI’s design process. We use ethnography, which is a way of uncovering the particulars of everyday life, as a guide while conducting research. Using ethnography helps link what people say to what they actually do. It is a thorough study of cultural behaviors.

When researching the environment, atmosphere, space and people, we observe, record and interview to get a better grasp on the needs of the end users. One research-based project we have completed recently took place at the Cleveland Science Center/NASA Glenn Research Center.

Although it is only a part of our design process it directs us to achieving our goal of BEHAVIORAL IMPACT THROUGH DESIGN by presenting us with tangible evidence, factual information and answers the question “why”.

Before we began our project at the Cleveland Science Center, as we do for every project, RGI created a list of goals which included recognizing and understanding the differences between spaces within a museum or gallery in order to better design exhibits that would engage the visitors and meet their needs.

We then designated three areas where we would set up a kiosk with an iPad that had the NASA application open for people to navigate and learn. The locations included the main lobby area which is right inside the front doors, the lower lobby area that is centrally located between exhibit spaces, the cafeteria and auditorium and the third location was in the lobby area of the NASA Glenn Research Center which is in the heart of their exhibit space.

Each area we selected has a different purpose and atmosphere. By placing the kiosk in the selected space, observing and recording, RGI will be able to point out the differences more clearly and be able to design a successful exhibit, wherever it may be located.

The day that we chose to carry on our observations, there was an event that NASA held which drew in an enormous amount of traffic. We set up the kiosk with the iPad in each location then observed and recorded the behaviors of the people and how they interacted with the space and the kiosk itself.

The first location, in the main lobby showed little or no activity. The project demonstrates that this is a transitional space where people enter and exit quickly. There is hardly any lingering or loitering. The recordings show that people are not in the mindset to engage, absorb and learn. They are just trying to get from one space to another.

The second location, the lower lobby was bustling with people moving around quickly getting from one area to another, grabbing lunch, talking with each other and stopping at the small exhibits scattered throughout the space. After observing and viewing our recordings we see that this is a multi-use space. It is congested and busy with lots of movement.

The last area, the lobby of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center was also full of action and life, but people here were moving slower and stopping more frequently than in the lower lobby. This demonstrates that within designated exhibit spaces people slow down so that they don’t miss something. By moving at a slower pace, it allows the brain to absorb more information.

This kiosk we used in this project was designed with the intent that the user would already have an interest in interacting with it. That was not the case in two out of the three locations. Our observations show that in order to make this exhibit more successful the overall design would need to change depending upon where it was going to be placed.

Location plays a large factor in what types of exhibits will be successful. Conducting research and really understanding the use of the location and the behaviors of the people within that space before building an exhibit or kiosk will help to decipher how to engage the different mindsets of people within that area.

We achieved our goal in this project because we now have concrete evidence with visuals to support our knowledge and understandings of the differences between spaces within a museum or gallery. It also demonstrates how important research grounded by ethnography is in the design process. Getting to really know and understand the needs and actions of our client’s client gives us insights that will better allow us to design for the end user. This then provides value on top of creating beautiful, aesthetically pleasing solutions.

You will uncover well-executed design when it is aimed at the discovery of reality.

While working on a project, I was sitting in a library taking notes and observing the public as they interacted with the computers, books, each other and the building itself, which was built just last year. It was a cold, cloudy day and the library was full, but quiet. Many people remained where they were seated for hours at a time absorbed in a book or surfing the internet. The security guards were talking softly to each other in the lobby and the librarians were sorting papers and stacking books. Everyone was busily entertaining themselves and practically ignoring what was going on around them.

After about two and a half hours I started to notice a change. A few people began to pack up their things and leave. The librarians were scattered, putting signs on tables, organizing food and juice boxes. There was much more movement now as I felt the dynamic of the library shift from calm to frenzied. Through the wall of glass on the west side of the library, I could see groups of kids running from the doors of the school next door. Teenagers began to filter into the library talking and laughing loudly, walking the length of the entire library to the back corner to sit down at tables. The children from the school burst through the doors and rushed to the front desk in order to be the first ones to sign in and use the computers designated for them in the children’s section. The library had now become a social gathering place, full of energy and excitement centered around the children.

Everyone seemed to adapt to the shift in dynamics and if they didn’t agree, they had already left. The people that remained either put headphones on or didn’t seem to mind the noise. Security guards and librarians were now on their toes ready to strike if things got out of control. It surprised me that the children were acting this way because I had been taught to be quiet and respectful while in a library. When there was a break in the action I decided to talk to one of the librarians to see what she thought about the change.

I began by asking her how long she has been a librarian and why she chose this profession. She explained, “I have been working in a library for about ten years and I originally decided to get a job here because it was a place to come and escape. I have a house full of boys and sometimes I need some peace”. She went on to say, “maybe I’m old fashioned, but it’s not always like that anymore. The library has become an indoor playground. Don’t get me wrong, we all want the kids to have fun and enjoy using the library, but they aren’t using the space how it was originally intended, things have changed.”

I thought about what she had said and pondered over my observations. The next week I decided to visit other libraries and talk to a few people who work with children to obtain a better understanding of why children’s behaviors in society have changed.

I visited four other libraries, all of which had devoted spaces for children. One had an additional area full of learning games, toys and activities… no books! I spent a lot of time here, watching the little ones play and interact with one another. I even talked with some parents, asking them why they come and what they like most, etc. All of them said the main reason for coming was to get out of the house and have their children be able to expel some energy, especially during the winter months, by running around, drawing, building, counting and working on puzzles. One mom said, “Coming here once a week gives me a chance to read while my three year old daughter can play in a controlled environment. It’s good for both of us, especially her. She is our only child, so when I bring her here she can play with other children her age which teaches her how to share and socialize.” I agreed with her. Those things are very important for kids at that age.

Right then I had an ‘ah ha’ moment. If you want to learn about the behaviors of children, where would you go to find kids? A school! Teachers see children everyday for six to eight hours, which is sometimes more than parents see their own kids. So, the next day I visited an elementary and a high school and spoke with a few teachers. Mr. Oswald, a high school math teacher had spoke a lot about the home lives of the kids and how much that has changed over the years. He said that this highly effects the students work, attitude, social skills etc. He went on to say how important it is that children have boundaries and rules. “Kids like knowing where that line is, some cross it, others don’t, but they all know what the consequences are. It helps when everyone is on the same page.” I asked him why he thought that kids behaviors over the years have changed so much and he responded by stating that, “times have changed so dramatically and it seems like kids behaviors have changed, but I don’t know if they really have”.

Along my journey to uncover behaviors I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Somsak, a pediatrician and mother of three. She believes that the actual behaviors of children haven’t really changed much over the years. “Kids are kids and will always behave like kids.” However, there are other things that have changed and contribute to the way society views childrens’ behaviors. For example, she mentioned that the family dynamic has changed since the mid 1900’s. In many households both parents work which means the relationship between the parents and children are different than in the past. Technology is also a huge factor. Children are watching more television and have access to the internet. Most importantly people travel more. Many families now have multiple vehicles, which means people get out more often and take their children with them. Dr. Somsak explained that in the past when one parent was at work the other stayed at home with the children. They had no other option. Now, people are constantly on the go and wherever they go, so do their kids.

Society has had to adapt to this change and after speaking with Dr. Somsak, I realize that libraries are not the only places that have taken children into consideration. Waiting rooms now have a corner with toys and books, restaurants have family friendly sections and churches have created entirely new services to attract the younger generations.

I decided to attend the youth group at my church that they have every Wednesday. I have not been there since I was a teenager and I couldn’t believe how different it was. It used to be a very serious discussion similar to a traditional Sunday school class and there were only about five kids that would come, mostly because our parents made us go. This time there were about 40 to 50 kids ranging in age from 7 to 20 years old. Most of the boys were playing basketball in the gym, some were working on a craft and others were hanging out and talking, but everyone was extremely loud. After about an hour everyone wondered upstairs to the sanctuary for the creative worship service that consisted of current music led with a guitar, a lot of talking and a main message which was about practicing sitting still, listening and being respectful for ten minutes at a time.

Through all of the chaos I found time to sit and talk with my pastor and urban ministries coordinator, Lisa Arledge. She came to our church when I was 15 years old and since then has focused on building a stronger youth population for our congregation. In just nine years Lisa has pulled in about 75 kids that attend regularly on Sunday, Wednesday or both. As she shared some of her strategies and beliefs with me I began to notice some similarities between her beliefs and Dr. Somsak’s.

Lisa said that once she earned the trust of the congregation she unleashed her crazy side and began focusing on the kids. “We went through a tough period, but now people are more open and the church is more chaotic. It is filled with energy and the tradition is getting tested because we are doing a lot of new things. The kids start calling for rides the day before, keeping in mind that the parents are not making them come. Basically you have to do the video, you have to do the media, you have to have the power points, you have to have something engaging. It has to be loud in order to get their attention. Once you have their attention you create a space that is very still and that is when they listen and things are absorbed.”

She went one to say that the reason the atmosphere has changed is because we are moving at a much faster pace. Even nine years ago the world was not as global and we weren’t as aware of the rest of the world. Lisa believes that in order to create a cooperative atmosphere with children today you must develop trust, set guidelines and have a routine. I thought about that for a minute and realized what she just said isn’t any different from how people interacted with children in the past.

After Lisa walked away I wandered around and slowly began to join in with the kids. I took a shot on the basketball court, missed, of course, picked up a giant sharpie and started drawing, I ran through the hallway playing tag and suddenly, it all felt so innocent. Taking into consideration the opinions of everyone I’d spoken with, it all seemed very clear to me now. Playing, laughing, socializing and simply having fun with the kids took me back to when I was very young. The behaviors haven’t changed at all. These kids act and play exactly like I did and just like kids 15, 30 and even 50 years ago. The medium has changed because of the rapid growth of technology and family structure has changed because the fast pace of our lives. Everything has changed and will continue to change and evolve except for the innocence of children.

Kids are full of life and wonder and whatever they do, it’s like they are doing it for the first time. It’s the simple things in life that we all lose sight of when we get older, like the adventure of seeing a weird bug in the grass, the amazement of hearing a drum beat, the excitement of feeling a horses nose, the delight of tasting an ice cream cone or just actually having the time to stop and smell the roses.

RGI’s experience in brand building includes development of identity solutions. This expertise is fundamental in the development of a new brand or refreshing an existing corporate image. We have developed solutions for organizations such as The Cleveland Public Library, Rockwell International, and ControlWorks LLC. Our appreciation of the importance of branding also extends to graphical solutions that are an integral component of the environments we create.
